DANIEL'S WINTER MAYHEM TOUR DIARY ------------------------------------PREVIOUS | NEXT

12.23.09 - Chicago, Illinois and the Danger of Black Ice

We all woke up at a random rest area on the way to Chicago. When everyone was good and ready, we hit that road once more.

During our first pit stop for gas, I warmed up some killer burritos I bought from Wal-Mart the night before and waited to use the restroom. Then I saw Mario huddled over this big machine. Curious, I went to see what all the hub-bub was about. Apparently, it’s this sort of game where you put a quarter in a slot and it falls next to these other quarters. The one you had put, then pushes the others and the rest pile up and if you’re lucky, fall down. And the ones that fall you get to keep. The intent in Mario’s face was serious and I knew he was really into it. And anyone who knows this goofy fucker, knows he loves his games. Haha!

We all started surrounding him and trying to see if how much he’d win and shit. He probably spent like 5 bucks worth of quarters and came back with nothing. Hahah! But it was hilarious and fun! Even as a spectator!

About halfway through the trip, Mario got tired, so he handed the wheel to David. This is the first time anyone else has driven the van yet. David got ready and we started driving again. As we got closer to Chicago the weather started taking a much colder tone. It began with slight rain here and there, then we started encountering snow. Not heavy snow fall, thank the gods, but it was the most snow any of us had ever seen fall. And during our second pit stop for gas, I stepped out to take a leak and the fucking floor was frozen with black ice. It was slipperier than a horny vagina! Ya know what I’m saying?! Haha!

Then we entered the Chicago city limits. The weather wasn’t too bad, but it was ridiculously cold. When we got closer to the venue the roads got pretty dangerous. Everything was snowed and iced over. We eventually found the venue but as we turned to find parking the van began to slip and slide. Thankfully we didn’t go crashing into the parked cars next to us because the streets were really narrow. David managed to get the beast parked and we unloaded trying not to slip and fall on the frozen sidewalk.

The venue was new to us, since we hadn’t played there yet. The first band was about to start playing as we were loading things in. The crowd was pretty decent for being so early in the show, so we were expecting quite the turn out. And judging from my previous shows in the Chicago area, I thought this show was going to be the best of the tour. I got merch up and running and then the show began. Our good buddies in Diamond Plate did an awesome set! And I got one of their new shirts. Pretty sick! I wore it the next day. Their new tune they played that night was really well put together. I enjoyed it. These dudes are getting better and better.

Now, as the night grew later the crowd seemed to die down more. Which was a disappointment, because, as for mentioned, we were expecting something awesome in Chicago. By the time it was time for us to play there was only a handful of people then there were earlier. Generally we don’t really care how many people there are though. So we fucked it up for the people who stuck around, whom we thank, of course. All in all, it was fun, though. No matter the turn out. The people who did stick around seemed to enjoy it, so that’s sick! And we made a few new fans as well. With our sets concluded we packed, got paid, said our good-byes and once more hit that road up. During the packing however we had some fun in the snow. Haha!

Everything was covered in ice and icicles. Here’s me biting some off a tree!

Quote of the day: “Hobo’s have it made in Chicago! They’ll never go thirsty!” someone commentating on the homeless people situation and the amount of snow everywhere.
